New Prescription Drug Expansion for NDs
The expansion of the legal ability to prescribe some prescriptions drugs includes most therapeutic agents, such as testosterone. Controlled substances, however, will still require a prescription from a medical doctor (MD). There are two additional caveats that our patients should be aware of. The first is that, just because an ND has the ability to prescribe a drug does not mean that they will prescribe that drug. For example, if a patient requests a new chemotherapy drug, most NDs will most probably refer this patient to an oncologist who has more experience with this agent. Second, most NDs prefer to avoid pharmaceutical interventions when at all possible, given the great number of other therapies that are available for first-line treatment. However, when a pharmaceutical agent, such as an antibiotic, is appropriate, NDs can now prescribe them. For more information, please discuss this issue with your physician.
